To create this thematic dot density map my partner and I:
-Harvested agriculture data from the USDA Agriculture Census and manipulated the excel files to create shape-files for ArcMaps based on counties.
-Each principle farm operator minority category was added as a separate layer and then combined into another separate layer so that the dots wouldn't overlap in the main map.
-Each of the separate layers were exported to Illustrator to create the side maps for each minority.
-Gradients were applied to the dots to give a 3-dimensional effect and allow for greater visibility in areas of overlapping data.
-State lines were applied to the main map to help the viewer analyze the distribution more effectively.
This map can be used to graphically demonstrate the uneven distribution of minority principle farm operators throughout the contiguous United States and Hawaii.
